Heriot-Watt University Sports Scholarship Programme

At Heriot-Watt University, our Sports Scholars Programme empowers student-athletes to excel both academically and athletically. Delivered in partnership with Oriam, Scotland’s national performance centre, the programme offers tailored support, elite training environments, and access to expert coaching—creating a pathway for students to thrive in sport while pursuing their studies.

Heriot-Watt University Football Scholars

Heriot-Watt Football Scholars train and compete at a high level while pursuing their academic goals. With access to Oriam’s elite facilities, professional coaching, and performance support, scholars are developed to reach their full potential both on and off the pitch.

Women’s Football Scholars benefit from a growing performance pathway, combining academic study with high-level training and competition. The programme supports development through BUCS fixtures and partnerships with local clubs.

Men’s Football Scholars compete in BUCS and East of Scotland leagues, with a focus on technical development, tactical understanding, and physical conditioning. The programme supports progression into semi-professional and professional environments.

Heriot-Watt University Squash Scholars

Heriot-Watt Squash Scholars train and compete at a high level through access to Oriam’s elite squash courts, expert coaching, and tailored performance support. The programme helps student-athletes develop technically and physically while representing the university in BUCS and national competitions.

The programme is closely linked with Scottish Squash, offering scholars the chance to train alongside national squad members through joint sessions and development pathways. This partnership enhances the athlete experience, providing exposure to elite-level coaching and competition, including opportunities to work with Commonwealth Games medallists and national coaches.

Heriot-Watt University Handball Scholars

Heriot-Watt Handball Scholars combine academic study with elite-level training and competition, supported by Oriam’s world-class facilities and coaching. The programme offers tailored performance support and is open to athletes competing at a high level.

Delivered in collaboration with the Scottish Handball Association, the scholarship is part of a pioneering European-first performance pathway. Scholars benefit from access to national-level training, major events hosted at Oriam, and a development route that supports both domestic and international ambitions.
