Updates to access routes at
Heriot-Watt Edinburgh Campus

During term time, traffic on campus can get congested, especially at the end of the day when everyone is trying to get home! To help maintain safe travel through campus, the university safeguarding team have issued an update on entry and exit points for campus.

There are currently three entry points and two exit points for Heriot-Watt Edinburgh Campus. The Avenue and Research Park North are open in both directions. The West Gait however, is strictly entry only from Curriehill road. It is strictly prohibited to exit campus through the West Gait at all times. This is due to the reduced line of sight at the junction to safely see oncoming vehicles on Curriehill Road.

If you are on campus and trying to get to Currie or Balerno, you can use the two existing exits on The Avenue and Research Park North. The Research Park exit takes you onto the A71 where you can then turn onto Curriehill Road.

The current road works on Riccarton Mains Road are scheduled to continue for approximately 8 weeks. Please follow the recommended diversion routes and allow a little extra time for your journey so you can still make it to your favourite Oriam activities on time.

Thinking about leaving the car at home?

The best way we can combat the ongoing traffic congestion is to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Here are a few alternative options for getting to Oriam and Heriot-Watt Edinburgh Campus.

  • Take the bus -  alongside the campus busses like the 25, 35 and 34 there are also Lothian Country busses x27 and x28 which stop at the North Gait with easy pedestrian access to campus.
  • Car Share - for Heriot-Watt Staff there is a car sharing scheme already in place.
  • Cycle - Check out our Bike Bothy to get yourself set for a successful cycle commute including bike hire, bike repairs and route planning.
