Heriot-Watt University Squash Scholarship Programme is designed and delivered to support squash players with their studies whilst competing at the highest level.

Heriot-Watt Squash Scholarship Programme

Heriot-Watt University Squash Scholarship Programme is delivered in partnership with Heriot-Watt University, Oriam and Heriot-Watt University Sports Union. It is designed to enable athletes to study whilst competing at the highest level. The programme embeds a high-performance training environment into a student athlete's weekly schedule whilst fully supporting academic study. Our scholarships operate on a top-up support basis, acting as a fully inclusive method to ensure each athlete can reach their full potential in their chosen sport while simultaneously reaching their full academic potential studying at Heriot-Watt University.


Squash Scholarship Benefits

As part of our Squash Scholarship Programme, athletes can access a range of fantastic benefits that support both their sport and their studies. 

(Support worth up to £10,500 per year per scholar)

  • Up to 40% Tuition Fee Reduction* (Applicable to fee-paying students only (Rest of UK, International, Scottish Postgraduate)

  • Daily group squash sessions delivered in collaboration with the Scottish Squash National Programme

  • Weekly Recovery sessions in the hydrotherapy pool

  • Typical Performance Week

  • 8 x per week Group training sessions are offered in partnership with the Scottish Squash National Programme. This allows Squash Scholars to train on court with players from Scotland's national team.
  • 1 x per week 1:1 individual squash coaching session with Head Squash Coach.
  • 2 x per week squash specific Strength and Conditioning sessions with Sport Scientist (physiotherapy support is also available during one of these sessions each week).
  • 1 x per week individual robustness training programme to complete in own time.
  • 1 x per week hydrotherapy pool recovery sessions.
  • Physiotherapy support as required.

  • Facilities

  • Oriam, Scotland's Sports Performance Centre is the home of Scottish Squash and offers a world-class venue for our Squash Scholarship Programme.
  • 8 x Squash Courts including 6 glass back courts and one show court with glass front wall and viewing gallery. 5 x courts with adjustable tin heights 17/19 inches.
  • Squash Scholars benefit from a free Oriam membership offering access to Oriam's modern fitness suite with the latest Technogym equipment. 
  • Additionally, Squash Scholars can access our two Strength and Conditioning Gyms complete with world-class equipment alongside Oriam's hydropool and sauna facilities.

    Competitive Opportunities

    Squash Scholars have an abundance of competitive opportunities available to them in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport), domestic and national league competition:

  • BUCS Team matches - HWU Men’s First Team compete in the BUCS Premier Division, as well as BUCS National Championship (competing against the best university teams in the UK)
  • BUCS Individuals
  • Scottish Student Sport Squash Championships
  • Scottish National League
  • East of Scotland Squash League
  • PSA Satellite held at Oriam annually
  • Greg Lobban - Squash Sports Scholar

    Eligibility Criteria

    • Be part of a National Governing Body (NGB) pathway
    • OR
    • National or international standard (youth or senior)
    • OR
    • Show evidence of future outstanding potential
    • AND

    Are offered and accept a place to study at Heriot-Watt University or meet the requirements to progress to the next year of your degree programme.

    Squash Scholarship Application Process

    1. Submit UCAS application to apply for your desired Heriot-Watt University degree programme. 
    2. Apply to Sport Scholarship Programme within 7 days of university course application (if contextualised admissions are required), otherwise it may not be possible to amend offer status. 
    3. Sport Governing Bodies/Performance Coaches contacted to confirm applicant’s current and projected performance level. 
    4. Oriam’s Performance Sport Panel review applications. 
    5. Outcomes communicated to applicants following the below timeline 


    The daily operations and coordination of the programme is managed by Oriam’s Athlete Lifestyle & Advocacy Coordinator. 

    Application Timeline

    Application Window: Open now until 31st August 2026

    Review of Applications: Outcomes announced within 4-6 weeks after application submitted, depending on receipt of sport governing body reference.

    Application outcome is determined by receipt of national sport governing body reference and/or confirmation of professional status. Please ensure your sport scholarship application is submitted with up-to-date reference contact details.
