Sunny Doig (second from right) celebrates her podium finish at the Montreal Pan American Open.
We caught up with Sunny to hear how her season is shaping up—both on the mat and in the classroom. Balancing elite sport with academic study is no small feat, but her determination and focus continue to drive her forward.
1. What are you most proud of this month, and why?
"I am most proud of representing team GB in the Montreal pan American Open this month while keeping up with work at university. It was my first international senior event and my first medal in my new weight category."
2. What’s one challenge you’ve overcome recently and how?
“The biggest challenge I have overcome recently was the increase in university work from second to third year. It has been really challenging balancing university, placement and training but keeping open communication with my coaches and academic staff has really helped me find a good balance."
3. What’s one academic or sporting goal you’re working towards this year?
“This coming year I would like to go to the Commonwealth Games. Medaling in Canada has put me at the minimum qualification standard to be selected to represent Scotland but I want to keep working towards this goal.”
Sunny’s story is a great example of what it means to be a Heriot-Watt Sports Scholar—balancing ambition, resilience, and a commitment to both sport and study. We’re proud to support athletes like Sunny as they chase their goals and inspire others along the way.
Stay tuned for next month’s feature as we continue to spotlight the incredible talent across our scholar community.
