Heriot-Watt University and Oriam are celebrating the selection of Sport Scholar Sunny Doig for Team Scotland’s judo squad ahead of this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
The 21-year-old Sport and Exercise Science student has earned her place on the national team following a series of impressive performances and will now have the opportunity to represent Scotland on one of the biggest stages in international sport.
For Doig, the selection represents the culmination of years of dedication both on and off the mat. Balancing the demands of elite-level judo with her studies at Heriot-Watt University, she has become a familiar face within the high-performance sporting environment at Oriam.
Her Commonwealth Games journey began long before her selection as an athlete. In 2022, Doig was part of Team Scotland’s Achieve Programme at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, giving her the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of a major multi-sport event and gain valuable insight into life within Team Scotland.
Four years on, she will return to the Games as a competitor.

Speaking about her selection, Doig said: “I was very proud to be selected for this summer’s Commonwealth Games. It had been a really tough selection period, so I was over the moon to be selected at the end of it.”
Representing Scotland at the Games has been a long-standing ambition for the Heriot-Watt student, who is determined to make the most of the opportunity.
She said: “Representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games has always been a huge goal of mine. Now that I have achieved that goal, I would like to give my best performance and hopefully get a podium finish.”
“Representing Scotland at this level means so much to me, especially in front of a home crowd,” she added.
As she prepares for one of the biggest competitions of her career, Doig hopes supporters will see the dedication that has gone into reaching this stage.
“When people watch me compete this summer, I hope they see all the hard work I have put into my training over the years come out in my performance,” she said. “I would also like to impress the crowd with some big throws and exciting judo!”
Everyone at Heriot-Watt University and Oriam would like to congratulate Sunny on her selection and wish her every success as she prepares to represent Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.
Her achievement is a testament to her hard work and commitment, and serves as an inspiration to aspiring student-athletes across the University community.
