Tennis Construction

Oriam is pleased to announce the return of tennis facilities to Heriot-Watt Edinburgh Campus. Work has commenced for a new six-court indoor tennis centre. It is being funded in partnership between Oriam, the LTA, sportscotland and Tennis Scotland through the Transforming Scottish Indoor Tennis (TSIT) fund. Construction of our new tennis centre has now begun, with the facility to open to the public in summer 2023.

Once opened, Oriam will be a destination for tennis for our students and local community but also nationally and we look forward to delivering this successful project in late summer 2023.

Why are we building an indoor tennis facility?

When Oriam was built in 2016, three tennis courts were removed to make space for the Oriam building. Oriam and the University made a commitment to re-instate tennis facilities at a later date. Since then external funding became available through the Transforming Indoor Scottish Tennis (TSIT) fund, which enabled the University to get far more for the investment that was due to be made.

Who is the Tennis Centre for?

We are pleased to say that tennis at Oriam will be open to all. Whether you are just starting out in the sport or looking to be the next Cameron Norrie or Emma Raducanu, our facility will cater for all abilities. The payment structure is still to be finalised however it will likely be based on a pay-as-you-play format.

will tennis courts be included within my existing membership?

The payment structure for accessing tennis is still to be finalised however, it is likely not to be included in existing Oriam memberships but rather a Pay-as-you-play (PAYP) model with some member benefits.

How long will construction last?

The tennis facility is set to open in summer 2023. Ideally ready for the 2023/2024 academic term.

Will any parts of the building be closed off during construction?

As far as possible, we will maintain normal service throughout the duration of construction. Sections of Oriam may be closed to the public for short periods of time. Any changes to area closures will be made clear in advance.

Will there be any jobs generated from this project?

Yes, a number of new tennis coaching and support jobs will be created by the time the project is completed, bringing a boost to local employment.
