Andrew Goodall is a rising star in the world of competitive climbing and a Sports Scholar at Heriot-Watt University, where he is studying Sport and Exercise Science. Originally from Currie, Andrew has quickly made a name for himself in speed climbing, a discipline known for its explosive intensity and precision. At just 18, he claimed bronze in the Senior Men's British Lead, Speed and Para-climbing Championships and went on to win gold at the European Youth Speed Climbing Championships in Imst, Austria.

Andrew’s transition from lead climbing to speed climbing has been marked by rapid progress, with personal bests now under 5.3 seconds on the 15m wall. Representing Heriot-Watt, he took first place at the National University Lead and Speed Climbing competition at Warwick University, scaling the wall in just 6.02 seconds. With his sights set on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Andrew continues to train at Oriam, Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre, combining elite sport with academic excellence.

Andrew Goodall - Sports Scholar

We caught up with Andrew, to hear how his season is shaping up—both on the wall and in the classroom. Balancing elite sport with academic study is no small feat, but Andrew’s drive and discipline continue to push him forward.

1. What are you most proud of this month, and why?

"My biggest achievement this month was breaking the British speed climbing record in Laval at the European Cup. It was a goal I've been chasing all season, and finally running it in competition was huge for me."

2.
What’s one challenge you’ve overcome recently and how?

“One challenge I faced this month was planning and completing an assignment while also away in France competing. I managed to get academic flexibility however, which took some pressure off and allowed me to put proper effort into both the comp and assignment."

3. What’s one academic or sporting goal you’re working towards this year?

“I’m aiming for a sub-5 second run up the speed wall the coming season, it’s never been done in the UK before, so it would set a new standard. Alongside that, getting good grades throughout this year would be amazing, achieving that balance is my goal”

Andrew’s story is a great example of what it means to be a Heriot-Watt Sports Scholar, balancing ambition, resilience, and a commitment to both sport and study. We’re proud to support athletes like Andrew as they chase their goals and inspire others along the way.

Stay tuned for next month’s feature as we continue to spotlight the incredible talent across our scholar community.
