At Oriam we truly believe Tennis is a sport for life. From early years to later-life beginners, structured coaching and regular sports activity provide benefits that go far beyond learning how to hit a ball. We asked our Tennis Coaches what they think are the benefits of learning to play tennis at each key stage in life.

  • Balance and Co-ordination Racquet sports like tennis are great for developing gross motor skills, balance and hand-eye co-ordination.
  • Teamwork and Sportsmanship Whilst tennis is often a solo sport, it is still a very sociable sport to get involved in. Our classes and coaches encourage kids to work together as a team. Our coaches also help young players create a positive mindset around matches and fair sportsmanship.
  • Critical thinking and Forward-planning Tennis encourages forward planning and critical thinking. From looking after your racquet to analysing your own game play and finding a winning strategy against a difficult opponent.
  • Strong Body, Strong Mind Regular tennis sessions can help build both physical and mental resilience. Playing sport regularly at a young age also lays the foundations for healthier habits in adult life.

Improve fitness without having to workout

We all know we need to exercise regularly to stay fit and healthy, but let's be honest, the gym isn't for everyone! The key to maintaining a healthy routine is to find activities and a diet that keeps you healthy but also leaves you feeling satisfied and energised. Tennis is a great workout for your cardio, strength and mobility all in one, perfect if you are short on time and need a change from the gym!

Positive mental health benefits

Tennis, like many other sports is great for relieving stress and building mental resilience. Physical activity releases endorphins which help keep you in a positive frame of mind. The competitive aspect of playing tennis matches also helps build your resilience to higher pressure situations, training your mind and body on how to channel spikes in adrenaline into positive and productive outlets.

Learn new skills in a supportive environment

It is never too late to learn a new skill, you can pick-up tennis at any age! Studies show that taking part in regular sport, exercise or active hobbies can help adults maintain your memory, cognitive processing and reaction times. Signing up to regular classes can help you stay accountable and keep motivated. If you know someone is expecting you to be there, you are more likely to keep showing up.

Reduce Risk of Injury Through Correct Technique

Sometimes our enthusiasm and competitive nature outshines our technique which can leave you feeling the consequences later. Whilst tennis is pretty easy to pick-up and start playing, classes can help if you want to play regularly with confidence. Regular classes or coaching can help you develop the right techniques and reduce the risk of bad habits causing you problems later.

Maintain mobility, agility & bone health

You might be surprised how much just one weekly tennis class could help you stay healthy and active as you get older. The combination of cardio and strength required to play a few drills or a friendly match can help you maintain your mobility, agility and bone density.

Improve reaction time and balance

Tennis and other racquet sports are great for keeping your mind sharp too. Help maintain your motor-skills, co-ordination and balance as you enjoy a fun game of social tennis.

Stay socially active and mentally engaged

Talking of social tennis.. group classes are a great way to boost your social activity and mental health whilst you get a good workout. We love to hear the chatter and laughter from our groups as they leave a class at Oriam. Many groups stop for refreshments at the Café to continue the chat.
